At Least 18 Dead, Countless Trapped After Indian Bridge Overpass Collapses

Rescue operations are underway after a bridge collapse killed at least 18 people in Northern India.

The incident happened Tuesday when a large beam on the overpass, which was under construction, broke apart, crushing nearby vehicles and pedestrians in the city of Varanasi.

Officials say 18 bodies have been recovered so far, while several other people are trapped under the rubble.

According to an eye witness, more six vehicles were crushed under the collapsed pillar.

Authorities sent military forces to the scene to rescue the injured, and construction cranes to lift the collapsed beam.

Local officials have ordered an inquiry into the incident, and are investigating the cause of the collapse.
